Broken City is a broken movie, top class actors like Russell Crowe and Mark Wahlberg struggling to make anything of its implausible plot and ludicrous characters. A crime thriller with a dash of politics, it’s wall-to-wall cliché, incomplete subplots...

There’s no need to compare other corruption stories to “Broken City” because the new movie from director Allen Hughes (his first without brother and fellow “Menace II Society” director Albert) nods to all of them.

It should come as no surprise that every character in a movie called “Broken City” is either rotten to the core, or a liar, or a schemer, or the bearer of seriously damaging secrets.

Sometimes films can be pretty accurately summed up in a word, and in Broken City’s case that word would be ‘workmanlike’. It is competently put together (Allen Hughes, one half of the Hughes brothers, is behind the camera), competently played (by good ...

With a heavyweight cast the likes of Mark Wahlberg and Russell Crowe as leads and Catherine Zeta-Jones, Jeffrey Wright and Barry Pepper as supporting, ‘Broken City’ ought to be so much better than the ho-hum political thriller it is.
Flicks.co.nz
Boasting a great supporting cast and a script that featured on 2008’s Black List (the best unproduced screenplays of that year), Broken City fails to make any points about political corruption, or even tell an entertaining story.

While Broken City can in no way be classified as a broken movie, it does sometime near the brink of falling apart on the spot.

If this ‘power corrupts’ potboiler had been made in the 1990s — with, say, Andy Garcia, Gene Hackman and Kim Basinger — it would already have felt old-fashioned. Forget it, Jake, it’s no Chinatown.
